Dan Brancaccio, Principal Consultant at BRIDGE Energy Group joins Eric Anderson, Manager, Distribution SCADA/FLISR at PG&E as a guest speaker at OSIsoft’s T&D Users Group Meeting held on 20-21 Sep 2017 at the Renaissance New Orleans Pere Marquette French Quarter, New Orleans, LA.
Optimizing the Benefits of FLISR with a Near-Real Time Management Dashboard
PG&E began their deployment of FLISR technology in 2010 as part of a CPUC approved three-year program to improve reliability by reducing both the frequency (SAIFI/CESO) and duration (SAIDI/CMI) of system outages across 20% of their distribution circuits. The benefits of this investment, expected to be realized over a five year horizon, have been substantial. In 2015, PG&E exceeded their goals for both outage avoidance as well as for total number of minutes of interruption. This has brought the total benefits of the project to over 103 million customer outage minutes avoided and one million customers have avoided a sustained outage, representing a total of a 50%.
Even with these successes, PG&E recognized the opportunity to realize even greater benefits from their investment in FLISR and ultimately build a strong business case for expanding to a full deployment of the technology. Building better tools to monitor both the system health and performance of the FLISR circuits was foundational to these efforts. Dan and Eric will share lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid when developing tools to maximize the benefits of FLISR deployments including key features of the near-real-time management dashboard and skills needed to ensure success.
